MY DESTINATION INSPIRATION FOR EVERY TYPE OF ESCAPE
Sponsored post in association with the British Airways American Express® Credit Card
January, it’s not everyone’s favourite month but for me, it’s one that allows me to get on top of my to do list, finish up last year’s admin (yep, there’s still plenty to do) and most excitingly, start making plans for new adventures!
I’m kicking off the year by working with American Express and British Airways on this sponsored post to share the wonderful places to escape to this January and how they can help you get there sooner.
Research from Culture Trip reveals that there are four main reasons why people choose to travel: Climate, Relaxation, Adventure and Culture. They have been helping to inspire me with the perfect destination to satisfy each (click here to find out more). Keep reading for my take on their suggestions as well as a download on my favourite destinations visited in 2018.
For adventure: Zermatt, in southern Switzerland, is a mountain resort that promises the ultimate escape for an adrenaline-fuelled start to the year. Renowned for skiing, climbing and hiking, the town is accessible via a beautiful scenic drive from Geneva Airport. Situated below the iconic Matterhorn peak, it’s an ideal spot for anyone craving an outdoor adventure.
For culture: From what I’ve seen and heard about Seville, I really can’t wait to visit. From beautiful architecture and flamenco dancing, to delicious tapas - it’s a city packed full of culture. I can’t wait to get exploring the city’s Gothic streets.
For relaxation: Long been on my radar, Budapest is on my hit list for a chilled-out weekend. The stunning architecture and Wes Anderson touches have my attention but it’s the spring baths and Hungarian massages I’d also love to try. The perfect destination for a tranquil, relaxing sort of break.
For climate: Finally, this Greek Island has been somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for a while: Mykonos. An ideal setting for some winter sun, with the famous whitewashed buildings, blue rooftops and cobbled streets - it’s a picturesque destination with sun-soaked temperatures all year round. And just a short flight from London, there’s no need to fly far for sunnier climes.
If you are yearning to plan your own escape, the British Airways American Express® Credit Card is a smart little thing to behold that could help you get away sooner. There is no annual fee, so it costs you nothing to sign up to, but the card’s biggest benefit? Avios! You can earn Avios on everyday purchases and redeem them on flights to hundreds of destinations (meaning you can start planning your next escape). Every £1 spend collects 1 Avios, so you can turn your daily coffees, shopping, meals out and cinema trips into a new adventure. Even better, if you spend £1,000 in your first three months of Cardmembership, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus Avios as a welcome treat*.
To help fuel your wanderlust inspiration for 2019, I’ve selected four of my favourite destinations visited last year. Where are you in the mood to book?
CLIMATE - BARCELONA
The weather in Barcelona starts to warm up by the end of April, meaning a good dose of Vitamin D and those warming sun rays are just a short flight away from London.
Renowned for its Spanish sunshine and tasty tapas, you can rely on Barcelona for beautiful blue skies and authentic small-plates. London to Barcelona is approx a 2 hour flight and only 15,000 Avios for a return economy flight from London*.
RELAXATION - ITALY
Nothing says relaxation more, in my opinion, than being sprawled on a beautiful beach on the Amalfi Coast. After visiting in April last year, I was met with white sands, turquoise blue waters and all the pasta my heart desired. To get the most out of the Amalfi Coast, spend your lazy days going from one dreamy setting to the next. From secluded beaches in Capri to the quaint and peaceful town of Ravello, Italy spoils you at every opportunity.
London to Naples is less than 3 hours flight time, and only 15,000 Avios for a return economy flight from London*.
ADVENTURE - CAPE TOWN
If you want a holiday that’s full of adventure with a different itinerary for each day, then Cape Town it is!
Visit the penguins on Boulders Beach, go on safari at Aquila, hike up Lion’s Head, discover the colourful area of Bo Kaap, explore Stellenbosch and its many vineyards, get a cable car up to the top of Table Mountain… the list goes on! Cape Town is a hugely popular destination and with good reason - there really is something for everyone.
London to Cape Town is approx a 12hr flight and 50,000 Avios for a return economy flight from London*. Or do what we did and use your Avios to upgrade from World Traveller Plus to Business Class! (terms apply).
CULTURE - COPENHAGEN
Finally, for a spot of culture - how about my favourite European city, Copenhagen? It really is a wonderful city to visit and there’s always plenty to eat, see, shop and explore when I go - I never get through it all (which is probably why I keep returning year on year!).
Whether that’s visiting Nyhavn at sunset or getting your daily dose of greens at the Botanical Gardens – Copenhagen has an abundance of culture. Top tip: do not pass go without trying the avocado toast at Atelier September and make sure you make time for the Tivoli Gardens (during winter it’s a must!).
